Updated: Jul 16

Looking for the best riads in Fes for families? Explore this curated collection of hotels that cater perfectly for those travelling with kids.

Whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple or a family, staying in a riad should be at the top of your “must-do” list when visiting Morocco. I never tire of finding new riads to stay in when I'm travelling around the country and there are some wonderful family-friendly options available.

These beautifully restored residences showcase traditional design, from carved plasterwork to zellige mosaic tiles, and offer a completely different experience from a cookie-cutter chain hotel.

While Marrakech has garnered a reputation for the diverse aesthetics of its riad stays, Fes is the place to experience these guesthouses at their most traditional. For me, it’s like stepping inside a palace - sometimes I really don't know where to look! And the experience isn’t lost on kids, with many Fes riads catering to families with spacious suites and interconnecting rooms.

In this article, I’ll highlight 10 of the best riads in Fes for families, whether you’re travelling on a budget or looking to splash out with a luxury stay.

Tips for finding a family-friendly riad in Fes

When searching for the best family riads in Fes, there are several factors to consider to help you find the ideal accommodation. First, determine your budget and the type of property you prefer, whether it’s a budget-friendly riad or a hotel offering a little more luxury.

If you're thinking about a family riad in the Fes medina, remember that the area is pedestrian-only, which means you can't just drive up to drop off your luggage. Look for properties that are close to one of the “babs” - the gates surrounding the medina - where taxis can pick up and drop off.

After you make your reservation, your hotel or riad will typically contact you to inform you about the best parking options and how to reach the property on foot. They might even send someone to meet you at the parking area so you don’t get lost.

Most riads and hotels in Fes also offer pickup services from the airport, train or bus station and I highly recommend arranging one for a smooth arrival. Alternatively, you can book a secure, fixed-price Fes airport transfer with Welcome Pickups.

Before you make a reservation, consider the amenities that are most important to your family, like a hammam, an onsite restaurant or facilities that cater to kids. If you're travelling with little ones, you might want to look for a babysitting service so you can have a night out together as a couple.

Once you discover a property that catches your eye, I recommend checking out reviews from other families to understand their experiences. This is an excellent way to determine if the riad met expectations as a family-friendly place to stay in Fes.

Keep in mind that the Fes medina has many mosques, from which the call to prayer rings out at dawn. If you or your kids are sensitive to noise, it might be wise to select a property that isn’t right next to a mosque. To ensure a restful night's sleep, I suggest bringing earplugs, especially if you're travelling with light sleepers.

Finally, be aware that every riad in Fes charges a government-mandated tourist tax, which must be paid directly to the property. This small fee is added to the room rate and is charged per night, per person (over 12 years age).
