Best riad-style 5-star hotel in Marrakech

If you're dreaming of staying in a traditional riad but want the services and amenities of a 5-star hotel, you can experience both at the Royal Mansour in Marrakech. Designed by King Mohammed VI himself and brought to life by some of the country's most skilled artisans, it’s one of the most luxurious hotels in Morocco.

Each of the 53 private riads is a work of art, adorned with zellige mosaics, handwoven textiles and authentic Moroccan crafts. When staying here, you can expect the utmost privacy and comfort. Aside from the bedrooms (you can opt from one to four), the riads boast private courtyards, plunge pools and rooftop terraces overlooking the Atlas Mountains.

Dining at the hotel's Michelin-star restaurant is an equally indulgent experience, with the culinary team preparing exceptional Moroccan cuisine. In total, there are four signature restaurants, including La Grande Brasserie (specialising in French share plates) and Sesamo (an Italian collaboration with the Alajmo brothers).

Beyond the sheer opulence, the Royal Mansour is committed to sustainable practices, actively recycling and composting waste, implementing water-saving technologies and utilising energy-efficient LED lights. It's this harmonious blend of uncompromising luxury and environmental stewardship that (to me) makes the Royal Mansour one of the best 5-star hotels in Marrakech.

It’s the striking views of Koutoubia Mosque that really set this luxury Marrakech hotel apart, not to mention its location right next to Djemaa el-Fnaa square. If you want to be within walking distance of all the action but able to retreat at a moment’s notice, then Les Jardins de la Koutoubia is for you.

This 5-star Marrakech hotel is renowned for the exceptional quality of its service, its decadent spa facilities and the sheer diversity of its culinary offerings. In total, there are three incredible restaurants to choose from, plus a poolside snack bar and a rooftop lounge serving tapas.

The 100+ rooms and suites are nothing short of palatial, with some offering separate lounges and private patios where you can relax in between sightseeing. Les Jardins de la Koutoubia also encompasses the Spa by Shiseido, which offers a range of soothing treatments and therapies designed to transport you to a state of pure bliss.

If your idea of luxury is exquisite design and an air of exclusivity, then this gorgeous Relais & Châteaux hotel is sure to impress. It occupies a grand riad that was originally built in the 1930s and has undergone a nine-month restoration by some of Marrakech's leading artisans and craftspeople.

The result is a stunning fusion of Moroccan architectural elements and modern comforts, exactly what I want from a 5-star stay in Marrakech. Villa des Orangers has garnered a reputation as one of the best boutique hotels in the city - the glowing reviews here really say it all.

In total, there are 32 individually decorated suites, all of which display exceptional Moroccan craftsmanship. In addition, there are three sparkling swimming pools and numerous patios where you can find a private spot to retreat.

The gourmet restaurant at Villa des Orangers reflects an East-meets-West philosophy - you can dine beneath the orange trees, beside the pool or in one of the fireside lounges.

Tips for selecting a 5-star hotel in Marrakech

When selecting a 5-star hotel in Marrakech, there are several key factors to consider to ensure an unforgettable experience.

First, decide on the style of accommodation that best suits your needs, whether it's a traditional riad, a spacious villa or a modern resort. Generally speaking, the 5-star resorts in the Marrakech Palmeraie will be larger and with more amenities than the luxury riads in the medina where space is at a premium.

Location is also crucial. If you’re planning to stay at a 5-star hotel in the Marrakech medina, it's essential to think about access since the medina is pedestrian-only - you won't be able to drive right up to the entrance to drop off your luggage. If you're driving yourself, there are several secure parking lots located near the medina's entrances, which offer better safety than leaving your rental car on the street.

After you make your reservation, your Marrakech accommodation will typically contact you to provide information about the nearest and safest parking options, as well as directions to reach the property on foot (you can also find this independently using Google Maps). Most 5-star Marrakech hotels in the medina can arrange for someone to meet you at the parking area, usually with a trolley for transporting your luggage.

Almost all Marrakech hotels and riads provide an airport pickup service and I highly recommend taking advantage of this for a stress-free experience. Alternatively, you can book a secure, fixed-price Marrakech airport transfer with Welcome Pickups.

A driver will greet you at the airport with a sign displaying your name and they will communicate with someone from your hotel to meet you in the parking area. This makes the journey to your hotel much simpler than trying to find your way through the maze of streets on your own!

If you’re staying at a 5-star hotel in Marrakech with onsite parking, then the arrival process is much more straightforward.

Usually when planning a stay in Marrakech, I’d recommend considering the noise levels from nearby bars and clubs, as well as the sound that emanates from the medina’s many mosques. But because 5-star hotels in Marrakech usually have good soundproofing, this is less of an issue.

If you’re a light sleeper and are concerned about being awoken by the Fajr adhan (the dawn call to prayer), then I’d recommend bringing earplugs, just in case.

Finally, keep in mind that every hotel in Marrakech (5-star or otherwise) is obligated to collect a government-mandated tourist tax. This tax needs to be paid directly to the hotel and is typically not included in your booking rate (although it is generally displayed below the booking rates to prevent any surprise charges). It is usually settled either at check-in or when you check out from your 5-star hotel in Marrakech.
